The growth of the natural gas industry in Texas has not been without its challenges. For the first time in most of our lives, drilling has moved towards the population centers of Texas. Today, more than 270,000 miles of pipeline cross the state of Texas, covering both rural and urban areas.

With Texas growing by more than 1,000 people a day, our energy demand will continue to increase to meet the growing needs of our residents and visitors. The need for natural gas will continue to expand alongside our other energy needs. As we drill for the energy we so badly need, the number one priority must be the safety of our citizens. Pipeline safety is one of the primary responsibilities of the Railroad Commission and will be my top priority as Commissioner.
