Texas is the nation's largest consumer and producer of energy.

Texas is also the leading producer of oil, natural gas and wind in the United States and the 5th largest producer of coal.

Transportation and electricity are our greatest energy needs. To power our homes and offices, we rely on a wide range of energy sources including coal, but natural gas is the chief energy source for electricity in Texas.

To power our cars and trucks, petroleum is the primary energy source, the majority of which is imported. While oil will continue to fuel our cars, trucks, buses and tractors for many years to come, we must develop alternative methods that meet our transportation needs and reduce our dependence on imported oil. Our economy, environment and national security depend on it.

As your Railroad Commissioner, I will work for energy policies that create jobs, protect our citizens and environment and encourage the development of new technologies.
